Darn Good Digs Review - Editors' Choice
Nice Garden Hotel, Nice, France Nominated By: Jeff Dimond, October '10
Price Range: 50-110 Euro # of Rooms: 14 Kid-Friendly: yes
What makes the Nice Garden Hotel so Darn Good? This small family owned hotel, with its courtyard garden and friendly vibe, feels like an oasis within the bustling, modern city of Nice. The owners and staff treated us like long-lost friends. They were helpful with any need we had during our stay, including providing restaurant recommendations and even securing us a bottle of champagne at the request of a friend.
Location: The hotel is located in a 19th century townhouse in the “new” part of the city, just a short stroll to the famous Baie des Anges waterfront promenade. The old town with its maze of narrow streets is a bit further, but also doable on foot. Since we were using Nice as our base to explore Monaco and the little towns along the Riviera, we particularly appreciated that the central train station was just a ten minute walk away.
Rooms: All fourteen rooms at the Nice Garden Hotel are simply and tastefully decorated, and some boast high ceilings, hardwood floors, and traces of faded ceiling frescoes. Our room was large and overlooked a lovely garden and patio area where we enjoyed our breakfast outdoors.
Food: The hotel serves a typical continental breakfast, yet at eight Euros, we jumped at the chance to eat outside in the shady garden beneath the orange and lemon trees. Plenty of restaurants are just a short walk from the hotel.
Vibe: The Nice Garden Hotel is low-key and quiet.
Keep in Mind: The hotel blends in with the neighborhood, and if you weren't looking for it, you might just miss it.
